We recommend taking a RIGHT onto Seyward Rd from Pat Bay Hwy, finding a safe place to turn around and then heading back through the intersection to save time.As summer drags on and the days get hotter and hotter, many of us are looking to cool off. Pro Tip Numero Dos: If you are coming from Victoria and trying to access Elk Lake (aka heading north), the left turn lane off of Pat Bay Hwy onto Sayward Rd can get very busy and can take upwards of 10 minutes at the light (the left turn light only lets about 3-4 cars through each rotation). Pro Tip Numero Uno: If you bring a floaty (dinghy, air mattress etc) there are buoys throughout the middle of the lake that you can tie up to and float away the afternoon. Blue-green algae can have serious health implications for humans and pets so please read any onsite signage prior to entering the water. IMPORTANT UPDATE: While there is no current CRD Alert for Elk Lake, a blue-green algae bloom was confirmed in January of this year. Both Elk and Beaver have sandy beaches, and great swimming access. Sandy beaches, hiking trails, playgrounds, washroom facilities, great fishing opportunities… you name it! And all just 20 minutes from Victoria! Elk Lake lies to the north of Beaver Lake but they are really just one lake as they are connected by a narrow channel of water. Only 20 minutes from Victoria, Thetis Lake is a highly accessible swimming spot for those looking for a quick dip. This spot, like the “Power Lines” is usually populated with younger crowds and is not recommended for small children. “The Trestle” - the foundation of an old trestle can be found along the river and has become a popular spot for swimming. As a result, this area is not well suited for children or individuals that have mobility issues. TAKE NOTE: the trail down from the road takes about 15 minutes to walk and becomes incredibly steep as you get closer to the river. The rock formations are unreal and the swimming is sublime. “The Power Lines” - this breathtaking spot gets its name from the power lines which hang above this section of the river. “Cedar Bridge” - this is one of the more family friendly areas along the river. The following are 3 spots along the river that will not disappoint: Find a place to pull in and follow the trail head down towards the river. As a general rule of thumb, you can simply drive along Nanaimo River Road and look for parked cars along the road. There are countless places to swim along the river. Swimming, rock jumping, sunbathing, and snorkeling can all be done here. With incredible smooth rock formations shaped over thousands of years and deep pools perfect for summer dips, this river system is one of the best spots to cool off in the summer months. When it comes to swimming holes, the Nanaimo River offers some of the Island’s best. That's not to say that we don't love Willows, Gonzales, Sombrio and all the other beautiful beaches that line our coast!
